Beside Nipton Pond

by Derek Pollard & Shannon Salter

On the cabin's canvas
Roof, the praying mantis
Shadow is the praying
Mantis, and it moves
From one pane of light to
Another

                  Softly behind
Our eyes, a quiet ache
Opens bright yellow sun

It is morning

                  Our feet
Search for the one cool square
Of mattress, the whole fire
Inside juniper blue

Ours to join this sky so
Utterly full

                  The Horizon's
Beveled edge, our shadow
In the hands of a small
Boy, train tracks through the
Desert field, the dry grass
Become glass in the light
